May is Pelvic Pain awareness month. Did you know that in Australia pelvic pain affects 1 in 5 women and 1 in 12 men at some time in their lives.
People who suffer from chronic pelvic and abdominal pain also often have co-occurring problems with depression, anxiety, poor sleep, difficulty with work, and relationship issues.
Commonly, people with chronic pelvic pain experience fear of their pain worsening and try to avoid things that may make their pain worse (including sex).
Pelvic pain is a multisystem disorder, which includes sexual, bowel, urinary, gynecological, and musculoskeletal systems. This can make it difficult to determine the mechanism or cause of pain, and makes treatment challenging and often suboptimal.
