How Can Counselling Help You?
- Do you live with persistent pain and want to learn more about managing it effectively?
- Are you uncertain about the future of your relationship?
- Do you find yourself ruminating and dwelling on self-critical thoughts?
- Do you work in a high-pressure environment and want to achieve a better work/life balance?
- Do you need some assistance to make changes in your life to achieve personal and professional goals?
- Is anxiety preventing you from performing at your best?
- Have you experienced frightening panic attacks that leave you emotionally and physically drained and confused?
- Do you have sleeping difficulties, leaving you feeling tired during the day and unable to function optimally?
These are just a few of the presenting problems that have prompted clients to come in to see me for counselling and support
Some people start counselling at the direction of their GP after a diagnosis of a mental health problem such as anxiety or depression. These disorders are common in the Australian population. Psychological therapy can be either a primary treatment, or combined with drug therapy, to assist in the management of these conditions. For these clients a Medicare rebate may be available to assist with funding for a limited number of sessions each year.

Other people seek counselling to assist with life challenges such as dealing with workplace bullies, infertility, relationship problems, grief and loss, difficult family dynamics, and anything involving big decisions and changes. Clients often comment that they benefit from talking through issues and gaining a neutral and non-judgemental perspective.

As a trained Clinical Psychologist I can provide assessment, diagnosis and treatment of a range of mental health problems and life challenges. My focus is on the person and their goals, rather than on the "disorder" or "problem".
We will work together to identify how you would like things to be different for you, and discover how to overcome any barriers that have been obstructing your way. There may be changes you can make both externally, such as moving to a new job, and internally, such as changing the way you communicate, that can make a big difference in your outlook, or the way others perceive you and interact with you.

Through therapy, you can expect to:
- gain insights into your own psychological makeup,
- develop skills such as relaxation, assertiveness, or dealing with panic,
- learn about your body and mind and how they function when you are in distress,
- learn to be more present with yourself and your feelings,
- identify what you are avoiding and what it costs you,
- explore challenging issues such as sexual identity confusion or difficult family dynamics in a caring, non-judgemental space,
- learn to work with your body, and have a different experience of pain through knowledge and self-compassion,
- and many other potential outcomes.
Many clients choose to reduce the frequency of their sessions once they have moved past the initial challenge that brought them to therapy, but maintain regular 'check-up' sessions to help keep them on track. Clients have said that they find this supportive even when it's only a few times each year. I am happy to afford flexibility for clients to make decisions about the treatment plan that is best for them.

Everyone has different needs, and when it comes to counselling, it's especially important to find a therapist who is a good fit for you. I tell new clients to try it out, see if it feels like a good fit, and if not, I'm happy to recommend another psychologist who might suit them better, or refer them back to their GP for another recommendation. It's your choice.
