Mindfulness
An excellent beginners guide to ACT
|
Mindfulness is the practice of: "paying attention in a particular way, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally”.
Jon Kabat-Zinn Over the past 15 years this idea that being mindful, or spending time in the present moment, is helpful to maintain or improve one's well being has become popularised. As a result there are many programs, courses, and Apps available that teach mindfulness practices. There is also a lot of misunderstanding about what it is to be mindful and how and why it can be helpful. |
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
|
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a psychological therapy rooted in mindfulness, as well as drawing from several other psychological therapies that have been previously well established. It was developed in the late 80's and has now become an essential therapeutic tool in psychology. ACT takes the practice of mindfulness to another level by aiding us to develop practices specifically focussed on some of the main difficulties experienced by people with mental health problems; namely intrusive or unhelpful thoughts and overthinking, and anxious, depressing or other uncomfortable feelings. ACT also encourages us to focus on what is most important, to define our values, and use this as a guide to behaviour and decision-making.
